The Greenwich Arts Council is excited to present this visual narrative by Mike and Sally Harris. Featuring personal and poignant interactions with people and places from extensive world travels, their observational and photography skills communicate a multi-dimensional world. The beauty of their work is that it strips away unnecessary complexity to allow the viewer to revel in the simplicity of human emotion.
"National Geographic photographer, friend and mentor Sam Abell once said: “And that desire--the strong desire to take pictures--is important. It borders on a need, based on a habit: the habit of seeing. Whether working or not, photographers are looking, seeing, and thinking about what they see, a habit that is both a pleasure and a problem, for we seldom capture in a single photograph the full expression of what we see and feel.”
What Sam Abell describes as a strong desire seems more like a burning passion to us. We are constantly looking, seeing and taking in the world around us. We look ahead, then right, left and even behind us. The challenge is finding a different perspective, a unique composition, which is why we prefer street photography where no two moments are the same. We are always searching for that image that will capture both our emotion as well as that of the viewer.
Although we have both enjoyed photography our whole lives, it wasn’t until about ten years ago that we developed this passion. We are incredibly fortunate that we share this desire to travel and experience other cultures, to find the photograph, to process it and then to share it with others. Most of all we are grateful to all the photographers we have studied with and traveled with who have inspired and encouraged us.
With this exhibit, we take a look back in time and share many of our favorite photographs from the last ten years. We hope you enjoy seeing our photographs as much as we enjoy making and sharing them with you."
